Home Sweet Home(page)

That King Kongesque figure in the picture to the left is me-Greg. Most of you who know me know how crazy it is to live in a major metropolis, because we all came from population: 4,425(give or take 1000) est. 1787. Here's a secrect: it's not that crazy but it is cool. I shall now attempt to convey the particulars of my personal experience as a boondocks boy in a city of over 300,000 people.

BROOKLYNITE12.09.05

On August 31st, 2005 I moved from East Elhurst in Queens to Crown Heights in Brooklyn. The new place is much much larger, plus I get my own room. I have been elated with this new change. I am living with Chris Kuklis, a talented musician going to The New School for Jazz. Also, my new location has afforded me the convenience of three different subway lines just 2 blocks away. Check the pics out to see the intereior! The only downer about the new place is that I have 6 keys. Two for the building, three for my door, one for the mailbox. Oh well, security is important.

I'm now attending classes full time at School of Visual arts in Manhattan! This place is soo great! I'm loving my classes and I've got the greatest teachers. My classes for this semester are Visual Literacy with Richard Wilde, the department chair. This class is basically solving problems creatively and thinking outside the box visually and conceptually. Drawing with John Ruggeri. John teaches a more reductive, abstract style that really teaches you to focus on shapes instead of objects. I will post some pics of those compositions soon. 3D illustration with Kevin O'Callaghan. Kevin is very well known in the world of 3D illustration. He has been with MTV since the very beginning. He has done dozens of projects for MTV including designing and producing the awards for the VMA's(moon man) and the MTV Movie Awards(popcorn). The class is basically clever sculpture. My first project was to take a word and describe it using a chair. My word was pill popper. We just put up a show at the MTV store in Times Square where they are having their 2006 Christmas Tree Extravaganza. This was our second project. We all had to create Christmas trees with some unique spin. Mine was a shower (thanks for all your help, Dad!). I didn't get in, but my teacher is still negotiating to get the trees into the corporate offices at MTV, which is better that the store anyway, cuz the important people walk through there. I also am currently in the process creating a chendelier and new projects are just over the horizon. Originality with Adrien Leban. A woman with strong political convictions, Adrien teaches how to fight the natural human urge to recreate and repeat what you have seen and already done. See the pics below. Basic Typography with Sara Giovanitti. Sara is a wonderful older German woman. So far, our projects have included self-portraits using only type, and a book jacket design. See pics below. We are currently working on a 2006 calender. Basic Graphic Design with Frank Young. Frank is a crazy old free spirit who teaches you to create new, unexpected design with great repetition.

I've been having a blast this year in Brooklyn. I've made lots of new friends and they're all such amazing, creative people. A big shout goes out to Lauren, Rachel, Chris, Shelli, Laura, Donnie, Wei Leigh, Ashley, Kenton, Tina, Chaz, Steve, Adria, Shirin, Patrick, Maria, Carlos, Geoff, Matt, Scott, Jennifer, Keisha, Geongy, Andrea, Mike, Basilio, Judy, Matt ChiChi, and all the great folks I didn't mention.

Well, that's a novel for you. Lots of pics too, check 'em out!

Until next time...
